MATHEMATICS

La Cumbre math teachers appreciate that each student comes with unique needs and abilities in math, and we are determined that all of our students will be successful, challenged, and ultimately well-prepared for high school coursework. Class placement is based on assessment testing, CST scores, and teacher recommendation. There is free math tutoring available before school, at lunch, during the after school program, and Monday and Wednesday evenings on an as-needed basis.

7th Grade Math Courses

Pre-Algebra 1: covers the key California State Mathematics Standards. It is the first of a two year pre-algebra sequence.

Pre-Algebra 1,2: covers all of the fifty-seven California State Mathematics Standards. This one year pre-algebra course prepares students to take algebra in the eighth grade.

G.A.T.E. Pre-Algebra: is an intensive mathematics program for advanced pre-algebra students and covers all of the fifty-seven California State Mathematics Standards. Depth and complexity are added to the California State Standards.

G.A.T.E. Algebra 1,2: is a rigorous one-year long algebra course for 7th grade GATE students who have already mastered the California 7th Grade Mathematics Standards. The primary goal of this course is for students to develop an understanding of algebraic concepts and to increase their problem-solving abilities through applications. Topics covered include: writing and solving equations and inequalities; rational numbers; factoring; graphing; systems of equations; radical expressions; and quadratic equations.

8th Grade Math Courses

Pre-Algebra 2: is the second of a two-year pre-algebra sequence and teaches the pre-algebra standards that are required for success in algebra and appear on the California High School Exit Exam.

Algebra 1,2: is a year-long algebra course designed for high-achieving students . The primary goal of this course is for students to develop an understanding of the topics and the ability to use problem solving skills. All of the California State Algebra Standards are taught including graphing, writing and solving equations, problem solving, symbol manipulation, slope, systems of equations, factoring and quadratics.

G.A.T.E. Algebra 1,2: is a rigorous one-year long algebra course for 8th grade GATE students. The primary goal of this course is for students to develop an understanding of algebraic concepts and to increase their problem-solving abilities through applications. Topics covered include: writing and solving equations and inequalities; rational numbers; factoring; graphing; systems of equations; radical expressions; and quadratic equations.

G.A.T.E. Geometry: introduces the basic principles of Euclidean Geometry and covers all California Geometry Standards in depth. Students will develop their ability to construct formal, logical arguments and proofs in geometric settings and problems.

Math Patterns: is a one-year elective for high-level 8th grade math students (GATE Algebra 1,2 and GATE Geometry) that focuses on the connections between mathematics and design. The first semester is taught through the Art Department and covers perspective, scale, symmetry and geometry in art. The second semester is taught through the Math Department and introduces students to Computer Aided Design (CAD).
