for the 2008-09 Program Year!

AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds in a domestic Peace Corps getting things done across America by meeting our educational, public safety, environmental, and human needs. The main focus of The Santa Barbara County Education Office Collaborative AmeriCorps Program is helping young people read and succeed in school. Members enjoy making a difference in the lives of K-9 students in participating elementary and junior high schools throughout Santa Barbara County. Members tutor low-level learners individually or in small groups and become essential team players at the school and in the communities where they serve. In addition, they receive training to assist their schools with Volunteer Recruitment and Emergency Preparedness.

In exchange for a year of service (August – June/July), AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance and an educational award to help pay back student loans or to pay for tuition at an educational institution. In addition, full time members are eligible for medical and dental insurance, and child care benefits.

Because the need for Volunteer Tutors in our schools is so critical right now, the AmeriCorps Program also works with community members who want to make a difference in young people’s lives by volunteering weekly as a tutor.
