Migrant students to attend Algebra Academy

Some 50 migrant students will take part in a first-ever Algebra Academy Camp April 2 to April 6 at Camp Whittier near Lake Cachuma, coordinated by the Migrant Education Program of the Santa Barbara County Education Office.

Participants will include students from Carpinteria High School grades 9 and 10, Carpinteria Middle School students grades 7 and 8, and other migrant students grades 7-10 from throughout Region XVIII (Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties).

Parents will have the opportunity to join their children at the camp one evening during the week.

The purpose of the camp is to develop student confidence in comprehending algebra concepts and learning mathematics in a natural environment that helps make learning fun. The camp will include innovative approaches to algebra as well as workshops with Santa Barbara City College artist Manuel Unzueta and a cultural evening with the Santa Ynez Chumash.
