Tom Spadoro, a program assistant with the Career Education Program
of the Santa Barbara County Education Office (SBCEO), was one of five
individuals from California and 34 in the nation selected to take part
in the 2002 New Leaders Academy, a one-year professional leadership
and management training program sponsored by the National Youth Employment
Coalition.
The New Leaders Academy is designed to equip professionals who serve
youth ages 14 to 25 with skills for leadership and management. The competitive,
year-long program provides training in current information about practice,
policy, and research from the fields of youth employment and youth development.
The program involves two residential training sessions. The first session
runs February 25 to March 1 in Washington, DC.
The National Youth Employment Coalition is a network of more than 190
youth employment or youth development organizations that promote policies
and programs which help young people succeed in becoming lifelong learners,
productive workers, and self-sufficient citizens.
The Career Education Program of the SBCEO works to duplicate at local
high schools the career resources available at the one-stop Employment
Resource Centers in both north and south counties.
We are proud of the work of the program in fully integrating its
education resources into the community, said County Superintendent
Bill Cirone, whose office coordinates the program. And we are
very proud of Tom for being selected for this training, which will enable
the program to work even more effectively with our local youth.
