Nominations are
now being accepted from parents, student councils, school administrators,
and other educators for this year’s Venoco,
Inc., Crystal Apple winners in five categories: outstanding elementary
teacher, outstanding secondary teacher, outstanding support teacher,
outstanding administrator, and outstanding classified employee.
Nomination forms, available from the Santa Barbara County Education
Office, are due March 15.
Ten Crystal Apples will be conferred — one in each of the five
categories in both the North County and the South Count.
“Each year we invite parents, students, and educators to nominate individuals
they feel have provided exceptional service to students so that we
can recognize and reward their outstanding accomplishments,” explained
County Superintendent Bill Cirone, whose office coordinates the program.
“We always point out that nominations should be based on the exemplary
character of the educator’s work, not solely on popularity or
longevity,” he explained. “If several people agree that
an individual should be nominated, it’s best for the group to
submit one nomination form.”
Members of a selection committee look for specific examples illustrating
that a nominee is exemplary in five areas:
• dedication to the education of students
• ability to interact effectively with students
•
ability to interact effectively with staff and community to meet students’ needs
• ability to challenge and inspire student to learn
• instructional and motivational skills.
Awards, including a $500 stipend to winners in each category, will
be presented at the Teachers Network Education Celebration on May 6.
