Groundhog Job Shadow Day
Airport director Karen Ramsdell and Congresswoman Lois Capps congressional staff member Ben Romo were slated to be among more than 150 community professionals countywide serving as role models for students on the second Groundhog Job Shadow Day, cleverly timed to coincide with Groundhog Day on February 2.
Others will include Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital administrators, KEYT meteorologist Steve Stewart, Judge Rogelio Flores, and Fifth District Supervisor Tom Urbanske.
The special day is intended to engage students K-12 in the world of work and provide them with a chance to explore career options. It is a national initiative, organized locally by a partnership involving the Santa Barbara County Education Office (SBCEO), the Industry Education Council, the School-to-Career Advisory Committee, Adopt-A-School, and the participating school districts.
Local coordinators include Art Fisher, director of career and youth employment programs at the SBCEO; Marilyn Lake, assistant coordinator of the Regional Occupational Program at the SBCEO; and School-to-Career coordinators from Santa Maria to Carpinteria.
"We are very happy that in our second year, the program has attracted the participation of some 20 schools and more than 150 individuals or organizations throughout the county who will serve as role models," said Superintendent Bill Cirone. "More than 1,200 students will participate countywide."
Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2000 National Coalition Partners: Americas Promise, School to Work Opportunities, Junior Achievement, and American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). Groundhog Day was featured in the January 16 Parade Magazine and to be aired on January Super Bowl commercials.
