Eric Chavez,
grandson of Cesar Chavez, will be guest speaker at a special donor recognition
reception and a Living Voices presentation from 5:30 to
7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 14, at the Mary Craig Auditorium of the Santa
Barbara Museum of Art.
The program is being sponsored by the Beyond Tolerance Center, the Santa
Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Anti-Defamation League.
Cesar Chavez changed the lives of Latin American farm workers, fought
for civil fights, and battled racism and indecent working conditions
in the late 1960s. The Living Voices performance, La Causa,
written by Rachel Atkins, enables audience members to experience this
chapter of American history as one young woman balances the demands
of her family and culture and fights to see her people free of poverty.
Nedra Gallegos portrays the immigrant worker. She and her mother both
worked in the fields in the Fresno area.
The event is free, though the Beyond Tolerance Center will gratefully
accept donations at the performance.
Further information is available by calling 569-3873, ext. 100.
