Business leaders to “rule the school”

The Santa Maria Valley Industry Education Council (SMVIEC) and the Economic Development Association are again sponsoring the popular Principal For a Day event on Monday, March 17.

More than 30 Santa Maria Valley business and community leaders will have an opportunity to "rule the school" at public and private school campuses. They will spend the morning at the school site to learn more about the challenges facing local educators. After their on-site experiences, they will meet at the Elks Lodge to share their experiences and receive recognition for their participation.

The luncheon event this year will also include the presentation of computer packages to eight students through the SMVIEC's Computer Connections program. A joint partnership between the SMVIEC and the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Computer Connections program helps students to bridge the "digital divide" that separates under-served students who do not have access to technology in their home.

The students who are receiving a computer package have been identified through their district as a child who would benefit from having a computer in their home to assist with their schoolwork.

The businesses and organizations that made this distribution possible are: the Employers Advisory Council, Hacienda Bank, the Santa Maria Police Officers Association, Toyota of Santa Maria, Diani Construction, and the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce.

More information is available by contacting Peggy Greer, SMVIEC Liaison at 349-0443.
