Spellers excel

A Marymount sixth grader and a Goleta Valley Junior High seventh grader took top honors in their respective divisions at the annual Santa Barbara County Spelling Bee Feb. 25.

In the elementary division 108 students competed from 57 schools, and sixth graders took the top three slots. Raisa Bruner of Marymount won first place. Holly Fetter of Crane Country Day took second place, and Kaisa Hanley of Ellwood School in Goleta took third place.

In the junior high division, 40 students competed from 21 schools. Nicole Zok, a seventh grader at Goleta Valley Junior High, took first place. Christopher Cusack, a seventh grader at Crane, took second and Daniel Park, an eighth grader at Jonata School in Buellton, placed third.

The two top winners in the elementary division will proceed to the 2003 State Spelling Bee May 3 at Sonoma State University in Rohnert. The two winners in the junior high division will proceed to the 2003 State Junior High Spelling Bee May 17 at San Rafael.
