Battle of the Books slated for March 27

The first-ever countywide Battle of the Books will be held Wednesday, March 27 in the auditorium of the Santa Barbara County Education Office, 4400 Cathedral Oaks Road, Santa Barbara.

The Battle of the Books, which is slated to become an annual event of the County Education Office, is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 4–6 that is intended to increase literacy by encouraging students to read good books.

Students will compete in teams to answer comprehension questions about books chosen by the Library Media Committee.

In this initial event, there will be 22 teams of six students apiece, for a total of 132 team members.
Participating schools countywide include: Alice Shaw, Aliso, Ballard, Foothill, Hope, Joe Nightingale, Los Berros, Los Olivos, Main, May Grisham, Miller, Monte Vista, Patterson Road, Peabody Charter, Pine Grove, Ralph Dunlap, Rice, Santa Ynez, Santa Ynez Valley Charter, Vandenberg Middle, Vieja Valley, and Vista de las Cruces.

“We are excited about this new program that will help increase enthusiasm for reading among our school children,” said County Superintendent Bill Cirone, whose office coordinates the program. “Matt Zuchowicz has done an outstanding job of devising and coordinating this new venture.”

Each student who takes part will receive a “goody bag,” and members of the two teams to reach the finals will receive additional prizes.

Community business partners can take part by providing a tax-deductible gift for the goody bags, or a gift certificate, coupon, or item of merchandise for the finalists’ prizes.

Further information is available by contacting Matt Zuchowicz, coordinator of instructional media services at the Santa Barbara County Education Office, 964-4711, ext. 5247, or via e-mail to mattzuch@sbceo.org.
