A lifeboat lifted
John-Miguel Dalbey to victory in the elementary division of the Santa
Barbara County Spelling Bee on Tuesday — or
rather, a “coracle,” which is a small round boat made from
animal skins stretched over a wicker frame, the winning word for the
sixth grader from Coastline Christian Academy.
Second place went to fifth grader Olivia Cusimano, from Cold Spring
School, who spelled “obstreperous," and third place went
to fifth grader Andrew Purwadi, from Harding School, who spelled “chandelier.”
In the secondary division, winning was hardly a knee-jerk reaction.
The winner, seventh grader Holly Fetter from Crane School, won by spelling “popliteal,” relating
to or located in the part of the leg behind the knee joint. Christopher
Cusack, an eighth grader also from Crane, took second place by spelling “entablatore,” in
classical architecture, the section that lies between the columns and
the roof. Third place went to seventh grader Robert Bucayu, from Santa
Mary of the Assumption School in Santa Maria, who spelled “ichthyologist.”
The two top winners in each division will proceed to the state level.
The 2004 Elementary State Spelling Bee will be held May 15 at Sonoma
State University in Rohnert. The State Junior High spelling Bee will
be held May 15 in San Rafael at the Marin County Office of Education.
