Dr. Jane Goodall
will share stories about chimps, their behavior, and threats to their
environment when she speaks to 2,000 students
in grades four to six and Roots & Shoots students groups from Santa
Barbara and Ventura Counties at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 8, at the
Arlington Theater.
The program is sponsored by the Children’s Creative Project of
the Santa Barbara County Education Office, with co-sponsorship from
Patagonia, Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation Education Outreach, Santa
Barbara Museum of Natural History, and UCSB Arts & Lectures.
Students in the audience will include those from Cold Spring, Goleta,
Hope, and Santa Barbara school districts.
Goodall will also acknowledge a Roots & Shoots student group whose
work project has enabled the Channel Islands fox to be placed on the
endangered species list.
“This program will provide a unique opportunity for students to listen
to one of the world's most influential scientists, conservationists, and humanitarians,” said
County Superintendent Bill Cirone, whose office is coordinating the program.
“She will inspire students with her message of hope, and with stories about
people from around the world who are making a difference in their communities
for people, animals, and the environment.”
Students will also have an opportunity to ask questions of Goodall after her
talk.
In addition to the program for students, Goodall will present a talk for the
public on Wednesday, April 7 at the Arlington. Tickets are available through
the UCSB Arts & Lectures ticket office.
