Fact Sheet for A+ Program

o Los Robles High School is a Residential Juvenile Court School for boys who are under the 24-hour supervision of the County Probation Department.

o Included among the student body are those who have limited English proficiency and those who require special education.

o Curriculum includes the core academics of English, math, social studies and science, along with electives such as vocational technologies.

o Computers for Families is a program that provides computers, low-cost internet access, and training for low-income families in the area. It counts on donated computers that are upgraded by vocational students in Los Robles High School classes.

o The A+ Computer Repair program, whose instructor is funded by a Carl Perkins Grant, has two functions: to refurbish donated computers and provide them to the Computers for Families program, and to train students doing the refurbishing so they can take and pass the A+ Computer Repair Certification Test, acquiring a marketable skill.

o The A+ Computer Repair program has a goal of 60 refurbished computers per month. As of October, 1999, 350 computers had been refurbished and provided to families who otherwise could not afford them.

o The length of commitment of each boy to Los Prietos Boys Camp averages four months. All are eligible to enroll in the computer repair program, but they must earn the opportunity through good behavior and academic effort.

o By October, 1999, six students had obtained sufficient skills and knowledge to sit for the A+ Certification exam. Of those initial six students, the average student score was within two questions out of 100 of passing. In February, Truman Guerra was the first to pass. In March, Josh Gonder was the second to pass, with a score higher than his instructor’s.

o Approximately 106 students have gone through the computer repair vocational course as of March 1, 2000.
