Living Voices to Perform for Students
A Living Voices performer will bring the inspiring story of the Japanese-American experience to life in classrooms in 24 schools in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and Lompoc through March and April.
Living Voices performances provide an innovative multi-media format that combine a live performer with archival film footage. This newest performance will depict the experience of families struggles to survive during the order to imprison thousands of Japanese-American families for four years during World War II.
Previous performances have included "Through the Eyes of a Friend," which focused on Anne Frank and the Holocaust; "The New American," which highlighted a new Irish immigrant to our country; and "The Right to Dream," which explored the Civil Rights movement.
"All these programs were extremely well received in the schools and provided a unique opportunity to explore history and social studies in a dramatic manner with high impact," explained County Superintendent Bill Cirone, whose office helps coordinate the project.
Students in grades 7 to 12 in private and public schools will experience this educational program during March and April when a Living Voices performer visits their school. The program is being organized and sponsored by the Beyond Tolerance Center, an educational center for understanding and respect.
Funding is obtained through the generous support of donors.
