Children of Uganda to Perform
More than 5800 public school children will attend a performance of Children of Uganda: Tour of Light 2000, presented by the Childrens Creative Project, a program of the Santa Barbara County Education Office, on Monday April 24 at the Santa Barbara Bowl. The program is cosponsored by the UCSB Arts & Lectures program, the Santa Barbara Bowl SAGE Program, Wells Fargo Bank, and The Freedom Forum.
The program will be presented for the public at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25 in UCSBs Campbell Hall.
Winners of the best performers category at the acclaimed 1993 Childrens Festival at Wolf Trap in Washington, D.C. Children of Uganda is comprised of 18 children ranging in age from six to sixteen. Most come from the Daughters of Charity Orphanage, the largest in the capital city of Pampala, Uganda.
The orphanage, founded in 1972, cares for thousands of children who have lost their parents to war, AIDS, and other diseases. The Children of Uganda serve as goodwill ambassadors for the 1.4 million orphans living in their country today.
The songs and dances performed feature a wide selection of Ugandan dialects as well as English and Swahili. Director Frank Katoola offers brief introductions throughout the program.
"The Childrens Creative Project is a unique arts in education organization designed to bring together elementary school children and professional artists," explained County Superintendent Bill Cirone, whose office directs the program. "It is a highly successful program that helps keep arts education a priority in this county."
