| The
Fifteenth District PTA, spanning all of Santa Barbara County, honored
County Superintendent Bill Cirone with
the highest
honorary service award from PTA — the Golden Oak Award — at
the group’s meeting in April.
The Golden Oak Award, given to an individual or organization that
has made significant contributions to the welfare of children and
youth in the school or community, is the most prestigious PTA award
in California.
Several letters of appreciation for Cirone’s creative and effective
leadership in the community were read during the ceremony, including
letters from Lavonne McBroom, past state PTA president; Susan Ham,
director of the center for community education; several county teachers
of the year; and former governor Pete Wilson.
“
Bill Cirone has always worked in very strong partnerships with parents
to accomplish a stronger education community,” said PTA president
Norene Nims. “PTA appreciates the parenting tips and critical
issues of education Mr. Cirone has brought to all of us through the
media, his tireless work to increase the availability of the arts
through Neighborhood Arts and the Children’s Creative Project,
and his commitment to continue the ‘Parents Are Teachers, Too’ conference,
co-sponsored by Fifteenth District PTA.
Fifteenth District PTA also presented Superintendent Cirone with
a “check” for $9,018,900, representing the hours of volunteer
work donated to the county’s schools from PTA parents last
year.
