Local Students Win State Science Awards


Fifteen local students qualified to exhibit in Los Angeles at the California State Science Fair at the California Science Center, Exposition Park, and three came away with state honors on May 23.

Daniel Lahr, of Santa Ynez Valley Union High School, who took first place in life science at the Santa Barbara County science fair, won second place in the state senior division for plant biology for his project, "What Does Lichens Like?" His advisor was Mrs. Brenda Khalili.

Sean Rys and Owen Norquay, of Goleta Valley Junior High, whose project took first place in the junior division life science section at the county level, won second place in the state in the junior division for pharmacology and toxicology for their project, "Taxol and Mitosis." Their advisor was Brad Penkala.

Other area students who qualified at the county level to participate in the state fair were Donald Atha of Carpinteria, Robin Deinhard of Goleta, Annique De Witt of Santa Barbara, Richard Heafey of Carpinteria, Yvonne Kemper of Santa Barbara, Daniel Manigault of Solvang, Kevin Milner of Goleta, Javin Oza of Goleta, Kristin Potterton of Santa Ynez, Heather Rausch of Goleta, Niles Skinner of Carpinteria, and Mark Von Dollen of Santa Barbara.
