4th Grade Language Arts We review Expository, Summary, Descriptive and Narrative writing as we get ready to take the State 4th Grade Star Writing exam on March 16th and 17th. The students have written essays using these forms of writing earlier in the school year and are now refreshing their memories and skills. The students will also be learning about bibliographies and note taking during our California Mission study this month. We will continue with the next story and related skills in the Open Court and Kaleidoscope reading series before Spring Break. Our current Open Court theme is From Medicine to Mystery: The history of medical breakthroughs in Western and Eastern medicine. The current Kaleidoscope theme is all about Surviving. The stories are all real life stories of how people survived dangerous situations by keeping clam and using their skills. Both reading series have been interesting and challenging this year! 4th Grade Math Wow! Math is fun when there's time for exploration, projects, and games. So far this year, we've been tackling all of the critical standards (those are the important ones marked with a star on the report card); at the moment, we're practicing long division. We think these 4th graders are smart enough to try dividing by two digits! We're also continuing to memorize our arithmetic facts with Beat the Clock & Big 12 quizzes…some students have made it to the end already! 4th Grade in General All of the 4th graders are participating in The Green Kids Series, an environmental awareness program sponsored by the CEC. Our last presentation was on composting; we're looking forward to the next one on planting. Students are also starting to write mission reports, which will lead up to our wonderful field trip to La Purisima Mission for Student Learning History Days. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There are many opportunities for them to borrow books during the school week. 5th Math Students are working to find decimal and percent equivalents for common fractions. We will also be covering the concepts of averages and geometry. As in language arts, we will prepare for the statewide test by practicing example questions. Homework this month may include some of these practice questions. Physical Education The spring is time for fifth grade to take the state physical fitness test. The p.e. classes will focus on fitness, but incorporate skills in soccer, basketball, softball, and team building games.
