Welcome back to school!!!

Dear Parents and Students,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and give you a brief summary of the upcoming year.

This is my eighteenth year of teaching. I have taught all grades and levels. My goal is to create a positive and engaging classroom atmosphere that will instill a love of learning while still maintaining a safe and secure environment. Students will receive rewards and positive praise throughout the day. I also have a strict discipline plan and will follow up with parent phone calls when necessary. We will spend the first few days agreeing upon the basic rules and structure of the classroom. I look forward to an exciting and challenging, as well as, fun-filled school year.

Schedule:
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be spent in the District adopted, Standards based, grade level, math book. This book is big and cumbersome and will remain at school. Every Wednesday students will take a quiz on the lessons we have covered that week and this will determine their schedule on Thursday's. Students who show that they are proficient will spend Thursday's working on activities that will challenge and motivate them. These are all self-paced activities of the student's choosing. Students who do not exhibit a firm grasp of that week's concepts will take part in Tutorials that are designed to keep them from falling behind. Friday's will be spent problem-solving and playing math-based games.

Extensions:
We will have many themes going on throughout the year that will supplement and enrich the basic curriculum. Some of these activities might include: building bridges using tooth picks, in-depth manipulative studies (such as tangrams and geoboards), Problems of the Week, putting together a monthly Math Newsletter, a stock market simulation and a micro society using our own monetary system. Of course in the spring we will once again be competing in the Math Super Bowl.

Homework:
Students will be given 30 minutes of homework each night (Monday - Thursday). It is designed to reinforce skills learned in class and will be corrected the next day. Homework will consist of Reteaching pages as well as students workbook and family involvement activities. If the homework is taking too long, please draw a line indicating the 30 minute mark and sign your names.

Wish List:
Kleenex, hand soap, and appropriate games from home (I cannot guarantee the condition of boxes when returned).

Phone Numbers:
I would like to place students randomly into math families. Four students will share their phone numbers, and if ever help is needed, they may phone math family members. (No later than 8:30 p.m. and for no more than 20 minutes unless given permission by parents for an extension of time.) There is also a web site that has been created by the textbook company to help students, parents, and teachers at www. harcourtschool. com.

Borden's Discipline Plan

Classroom Rules:

1. Follow directions. 2. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 3. No swearing, teasing, or name calling.

Positive Recognition:

*Verbal praise
*Positive notes sent to parents
*Positive notes to students

Students will earn points for appropriate behavior in class. Fifty Borden bonus points are needed to receive one of the following awards:

*15 minutes radio time
*No homework for 1 week
*$5.00 certificate for pizza party. (Must earn 4 certificates to order pizza for class)
*15 minutes free time
*15 minutes game time
*Students select their own seat on Friday.
*Take 5 math problems off next test.
*Each student receives 25$ in Borden Bucks

More student generated ideas will be added as the year progresses.
*Micro Society using Borden Bucks begins in October.

Consequences

First time a student breaks a rule: *Warning

Second time: *5 minutes working away from group.

Third time: *5 additional minutes working away from group. *Behavior homework: write in behavior journal (to be signed by parent). *Complete 3 problem solving questions. *Teacher/ student conference.

Fourth time: *Call parents. Fifth Time: *Send to principal.

Severe Clause: *Send to principal or call parents.

Estimados Estudiantes y Padres de Familia:

Muchas GRACIAS! Casi todos los estudiantes han aprendido las tablas de multiplicar hasta el 12 en un minuto. Son 40 resultados en 5to grado y 50 en 6to. Se que los estudiantes han estudiado las multiplicaciones porque las operaciones las hacen mas rapito y con mayor acierto. Gracias por utilizar las tarjetas con las operaciones, medir el tiempo y memorizar las multiplicaciones. Ahora pasaremos a las divisiones, las fracciones y las figuras geométricas.

Quisiera darles a conocer que los estudiantes de 5to ano han terminado con los decimales y ahora están trabajando con las fracciones. Actualmente estamos sumando y restando. Aprender las multiplicaciones y divisiones de fracciones será el siguiente paso. Pueden practicar con las paginas con estos temas.

Los estudiantes de 6to grado han finalizado de estudiar las fracciones, los decimales y los porcentajes. Los alumnos deben ser capaces en convertir números en cualquiera de estos formatos. La parte difícil es comparar y ordenar los números cuando hay uno de cada formato. Estamos trabajando en sumar, restar, multiplicar y dividir integrales. Integrales son los números enteros y sus opuestos. Pueden practicar en el libro de trabajo en las paginas con ese titulo.

Los estudiantes de todos los grados empezaran a tener competencias de matemáticas en sus salones. Habrá equipos de trabajo para resolver los problemas así como, exámenes individuales. Ambos les darán puntos durante los siguientes meses. Los equipos ganadores obtendrán billetes Borden. Todos los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de participar en las pruebas para quedar en el concurso del "Super Ball" del Condado que se realizara en el mes de mayo. Utilizare el mismo formato para seleccionar a las cuatro miembros del equipo.

Los billetes Borden y la pequeña sociedad están resultando adecuados. ¡ Los estudiantes han ganado mucho dinero! Tendremos otro día de la pequeña sociedad el día 31 d enero. Algunas de las mejores tiendas tienen cosas en oferta, manicuras, cuentas, e historietas cómicas personalizadas. Por supuesto que tenemos cosas para comer. Al respecto, he hecho una regla, solo pueden tomar dos cosas de comer o para beber en la clase.

Como van en la tarea? Por favor escríbanme notas en la tarea o en las agendas de los estudiantes. Reviso la tarea para reafirmar las lecciones anteriores. Corregimos y reafirmamos cada ejercicio. Si están perdidos o confundidos con la tareas junto con el estudiantes favor de avisarme. Es probable que ustedes no sean los únicos. Si puedo saber de los problemas que los estudiantes tienen a tiempo ayudara a todos. Habrán observado que he estado pidiendo que firmen todos los exámenes y cuestionarios. Espero que de esta manera le este ayudando a encontrar los temas para practicar en el libro de trabajo y así conocer lo que su(s) hijos están aprendiendo. Cualquier resultado que tenga menos del 70% se le dará accesoria en los conceptos y volverá a tomar el examen. Estos temas se tendrán que practicar en el libro de trabajo.

No he estado revezando mi correo electrónico. Lo siento y gracias por sus buenas intenciones. Es mejor que me llamen a la escuela y me dejen un mensaje al 563-2515 es mas conveniente para mi llamarlos.
