Classroom Rules:
Students are expected to behave in a scholarly, enthusiastic way so that learning is continually happening. This includes showing respect for the teacher and others, being polite, using low voices, staying in one's own seat, and generally behaving in a way that allows for the class to function smoothly. The concepts of Character Counts have been explained and are expected. What I have noticed is that the students are generally well behaved, but some have a tendency to chat, often causing them to miss directions.

Homework:
Students should have about 30 minutes of homework and 20 minutes of reading from this class. This is separate from Math/Science/Exploratory. Sometimes students take home work they did not finish in class. Homework is assigned nightly and corresponds to the lessons taught in class each day.

Students will have "study buddy" names and phone numbers in their agendas to be called in case there is a need of clarification, or in case of an absence.

Students should write their homework in the school provided agenda, and for now, have it signed each night. We write the homework together each day from the board. Students who do not have homework ready go to the patio to complete the work while the work is corrected. They do not receive a stamp in the agenda if any part of the homework is incomplete. Students earn Book Bucks at the end of the week for complete work. The Book Bucks are to be applied towards purchase of book order books. Students who do not do homework and/or have missing assignments will be excluded from field trips - this is Adams School policy.

Grading: Student work is graded compared to the following standards:

4 is above grade level - excellent
3 is at grade level - good
2 is below grade level - low, needs help
1 is very below grade level - needs much help

Attendance:
Attendance is very important. When a student is absent, he/she misses out on teacher lessons, as well as class discussion of concepts. If your child is absent, it is his/her responsibility to find out what assignments were missed. Missed tests need to be made up at lunch, before or after school on the day of return. Missed work should be completed as soon as possible.

Late Work:
I accept some late work at reduced credit. If there is a reason you, as a parent, wish to excuse the student for late work, please write a note with an explanation.

Conferences:
Not all families will be asked to come in for a conference. Conferences may be requested by teachers, parents, or even the student! Notes will come home toward the middle of October for the conferences at the end of that month. If you would like to contact me before conference time regarding your student, please feel free to call.

What makes GATE GATE: Using the California State Standards as the base of all instruction, students will be expected to delve in to the concepts at a deeper level of understanding and explore the complexities of issues. Active classroom participation in discussion is expected. Much independence for completing assignments is required. Students will be conducting inquiries and preparing products for sharing with their classmates, both in small groups and independently. The investigations will be structured and graded on rubrics, so that all are aware of the parameters of the assignment. Many options for projects will be provided so that different styles of learning are incorporated. We will all learn from each other!
