Dear Parents,

This will be an other exciting year for all of us!

My name is Michael Alvarez. I have worked for Santa Barbara School District since 1990 as a Junior High math teacher, computer technician & trainer, counselor, 2nd - 6th grade elementary teacher, administrator and tutor. I sincerely love teaching at Adams Elementary School.

We have many fun and exciting learning activities planned for the year. Our focus will be READING, WRITING and MATH. We will also study science and social studies, primarily California and U.S. history, geography, culture and traditions.

It is our job, yours and mine, to help your child become the best that he/she can be. Let's work together to make this a very successful year. Success in school starts by being prepared every day. Please make sure that your child has a good night's sleep and a nutritious breakfast. Students should arrive at Adams by 8:25, at the latest. Please take an active role in checking over homework assignments as well as making sure your child has the materials he/she needs for school every day. It is important for your child to have the following materials as soon as possible:

1. a backpack to carry all school supplies
2. a sturdy, 2 inch binder with 3 metal rings
3. a pencil pouch for their binder
4. lined white paper, pencils and erasers
5. a Spanish-English dictionary

AT HOME: There should be a quiet place and time set aside for nightly homework. Each student should read for at least 30 minutes a night in addition to the other homework. I strongly discourage all students from watching television from Monday to Thursday.

AT SCHOOL: I will get the students started on the homework skills sheet before they take it home. This should help them become independent in completing their homework and make it easier to get it done. We will be checking, reviewing and correcting homework in class each day. This will help me to know who is having trouble and be able to help them immediately with the work. Each student will be encouraged to ask for help right when he/she needs it.
