Emergency Preparedness
AmeriCorps members will participate in training's offered by the Santa Barbara County Red Cross and by the Emergency Services Division of SBCEO to gain knowledge and expertise in homeland security and disaster preparedness. Once trained, Members, in collaboration with school site staff, will complete a review of the site's current homeland security and disaster preparedness status. Assessment findings will then be utilized to develop plans and proposals for site implementation. There are several components of disaster preparedness which should be evaluated. These components are as follows:
- Emergency Plan: This is a comprehensive plan which is updated annually. It contains complete instructions on what staff and students should do in the event of an emergency. Also contained is a map of the school which indicates where the emergency water and gas shut off valves are in addition to the electric box is.
- Disaster Shed: This is a storage area located on campus. At minimum water, food rations, and medical supplies should be kept safe in this storage area. Check with your local school district for a complete inventory list on what should be included in the disaster shed.
- Fire and Lock Down Drills: Fire drills should be conducted once a month and lock down drills should happen at least once a year. Proper procedures for fire and lock down drills should be understood by all staff and students.
- Prevention Education: Students should be provided with some form instruction on what to do in case of an emergency. Additionally instruction on fire, water, and personal safety should be given to students. The American Red Cross is a great resource in promoting disaster instruction.
