ICCAT Mission

Building inclusive, high quality child care opportunities for all children and their families in Santa Barbara County

ICCAT Goals

  1. Acquire stable, ongoing sources of funding for an inclusive child care coordinator and ICCAT projects
  2. Increase the community’s awareness of the value of diversity and inclusive child care
  3. Identify training, technical assistance, family support, and other resources that will increase the capacity and quality of inclusive child care
  4. Advocate for the active involvement in the IEP/IFSP and service delivery processes
  5. Provide families and child care providers with information about existing resources that support children with disabilities and other special needs in inclusive child care environments

ICCAT Membership

Membership on the Inclusive Child Care Action Team is open to any individual interested in increasing the quality and quantity of inclusive child care in Santa Barbara County. Interested individuals should contact the Child Care Planning Council for meeting information.

Inclusive Child Care Position Statement

Adopted by the Santa Barbara County Child Care Planning Council on June 8, 2005 Distributed to local education agencies, organizations providing services to children with disabilities and their families, and child care associations.

Project EXCEPTIONAL

Training for individuals who are interested in expanding their knowledge about inclusion in early childhood and school-age child care settings. Watch for announcements of local training opportunities or request training for your organization.

Welcoming All Children Inclusion Planner

The most critical step to successful inclusive child care is collaborative planning and preparation for a child to enter the child care setting. These useful resources are designed to support children, families, and providers though this process.

Talking Points: Inclusive Child Care

The Talking Points below may be useful when discussing the need for inclusive child care with policymakers, funders, or the general community:
  • Our community benefits when diversity is welcomed and celebrated.
  • Approximately 10% of children in Santa Barbara County have a developmental disability or other special needs.
  • The overall health of our community, including the strength of our workforce, is impacted greatly when children with special needs are welcomed in the child care environment.
  • Lack of knowledge and awareness perpetuates the discrimination against the inclusion of children with special needs in child care.
  • The goal of the Inclusive Child Care Action Team is to support access to quality child care for all children.
