Standards of Quality

  • The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has developed 10 standards that outline what all preschools, child care centers, kindergartens, and other early childhood education programs should provide to nurture young children: Relationships, Curriculum, Teaching, Health, Assessment of Child Progress, Teachers, Families, Community Relationships, Physical Environment, and Leadership & Management.

  • The National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) Accreditation defines standards of quality for family child care in five content areas: relationships, the environment, developmental learning activities, safety and health, and professional and business practices.

  • The California Department of Education, Child Development Division has developed standards of quality for state funded child development programs. Information and materials supporting required standards are available from the California Department of Education.

  • Environmental Rating Scales are instruments for assessing the quality of early care and education programs. Different scales are available for different types of programs: early childhood (preschool) centers, infant/toddler programs, family child care and school-age programs. More information about the Environmental Rating Scales is available from the University of North Carolina Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute.
