Organization for meeting in Berkeley: Cars, planes and travel

Discussion of Senate Bill 19 (PDF Summary):

  • SB 19 is passed, but not funded.
  • Grant committee will be making recommendations for District policies for vending machines
  • Sodas, high calorie and high sugar, contribute to obesity issues
  • California School Board will recommend a nutritional policy in February

Jeri Waite, guest, Five a Day representative and Carpinteria Tooth Fairy, brought materials for sharing and to support the grants

Sandy Crowe, (Agricultural Liason) shared. Peabody School in Santa Barbara has it's own garden and salad bar. Possible guest speaker.

Geneva Cerda, Food Service Director, Lynn Gibson, cafeteria Manager, Kathleen Manos PE, Sheri Eiker-Wiles, E. Psychology graduate student and evaluator, Tricia Price, Curriculum Coordinator, Marybeth Carty, Mentor Match Program Coordinator.

Calendar Updates: Possible presentation to the board. Tabled until after the meeting.

Goal Setting:

  • Establish the larger committee of participants: Discussion and outreach
  • Outreach Meetings: Identify community meeting dates, with food and video
  • Clarification of the Committee roles and contact responsibilities
  • Review of goals and sharing
  • Communication to community

Jeri shared educational materials, posters, booklets, and other meeting possibilities. A goal of "Five a Day" is to work with local restaurants to offer healthy alternatives to lunch.

Sandy shared Ventura farmer's market opportunities to make use of Calfornia grown fruits and vegetables and the connection to healthy salad bars in schools.
