LEAF Grant Advisory Committee Meeting
September 16, 2003
Minutes
1. Bob Keating discussed the proposed sports complex.
2. Sheri Eiker-Wiles talked about two grants she is applying for that would help fund our track and hard courts (Nike & Waste Management).
3. Craig Sabraw talked about the Active for Life" program that the American Cancer Society sponsors. Approximately 17 staff members are participating in this work place wellness program. We have divided into two teams that are competing against each other. Staff members have set goals and earn 1 point per minute of activity. We walk at lunch on Wednesday and have an activity after school on Thursdays.
4. Bonnie Jenuine shared the proposed Food and Nutrition Policy that will be presented to the school board for a first reading on Sept. 23rd.
5. Tricia Price shared information on the State Superintendents Challenge. We hope to apply for this.
6. Sandy Crowe talked about the progress that has been made on our garden. Over the summer we learned we would have to change the location. It will now be located behind the art room. Harry Sandborn put up a fence for us. John Avila and his students are building boxes for us for the raised planting beds. A garden club has been started and they will get the garden going in the fall. They will be meeting at lunch and after school. Field trips to local farms and Lotus Land have been planned.
7. Marybeth Carty announced, The Garden Party, which will be an event planned to showcase our new garden. We will have activities in the garden, the home economics room, on the field and in the gym. Students, teachers, staff and community members are invited. We will also invite our State Superintendent of Schools, School Board members and our Superintendent. Participants will be given a punch card, which when complete can be entered into a drawing. We will unveil the new McDonalds Citizenship Certificate, which is redeemable for a yogurt parfait. Jan Marholin has arranged this.
8. Kathleen Manos discussed fitness and a new program that her students are involved in. We adjourned to the new gym where some of us participated in one of the new activities. She had the gym set up something like Curves. We tried some of the centers and checked our pulses before and after.
9. Some members visited the garden with Sandy.
10. All LEAF Grant Advisory Members are invited to attend our Garden Party, on November 19th from 3:00 to 5:00.
11. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2003 from 3:30 to 4:30.
