Lesson 5 Activities - Week 5:

Presentations and Closure

Students Present Power Point Mini-Reports:

After artwork is completed, truths added to a digital image of each, and Power Point Slides are finished, each student takes a turn to present their Slide Show Report in front of the class.  The rest of the class takes notes on each American and completes a peer critique/assessment.

Preparation Work

¥  Place all Power Point slide shows into a folder on the desktop.  Be sure students labeled each file with their names.

¥  Open up the Power Point Application and leave open for the entire presentation portion.  Students can open up their files within this application when it is their turn each time.

¥  Set up the laptop/computer to connect to the LCD Projector and large classroom screen.  Be sure that a remote is available for the students to use up front.

Students Audience Takes Notes and Critiques/Peer Assesses:

Pass out Note Taking & Peer Assessment/Critique Packets (Xerox enough for each student and staple on the left into a packet.  Print pages back to back so that tear-off portion aligns in the same spot when back-to-back).

Explain how students will take notes on each Notable American Mini-Report as well as provide feedback to each of their classmates on both content and presentation skills.    Note how the tear-off portion to the side is the peer critique/assessment piece and should stay attached until after the teacher has reviewed each packet and given students a grade for their listening/speaking/critiquing.  After that, students can cut off these sections and distribute them to classmatesÕ desks.

Provide instruction on appropriate and effective critiquing.  The goals is for specific praises and suggestions rather than vague Ògood jobs.Ó

Concerning note taking, students may take bulleted notes or use outline form, but the most important part is that they are warned that they will be allowed to use their note taking packet when doing their Integrated Writing Assessment at the end of the unit.  The better notes they take, the more information they will have at their fingertips to do their Writing Assessment.

Teacher Assessing During Report Presentations:

WHILE students are presenting their reports, the teacher should have already copied a stack of Notable American Grade Sheets with which to use while grading student presentations.   Just mark the scores after each section with a colored pen and add up each section later.  Make comments to the right.  The listening grade can be done after periodic checks of  the Note Taking and Critique Packets that students are using during presentations.  Note that the grading sheet has separated out the many discrete skills to help you record them in your grade book later.

Self Assessment:

After each student presents, he/she marks a self-assessment score for the presentation section on the Technology Skills Rubric for the unit then hands it to the teacher to do the same for that portion.

(Student uses pencil to circle the correct area, and the teacher uses a different color.)

The portion to be completed at this point is below:
