Overview
6th Grade Film Festival is an interdisciplinary, tech-based unit to introduce 6th grade students to the elements of a plot using a variety of Computer based programs. Students create short films using a variety of applications such as i-Movie, Garage Band, and Photoshop. The project was inspired by a need for students to better understand the components of a plot. In this unit, students will participate in a whole class discussion on the components of a literary plot including, understanding of the components of a plot, the development of characters, and the ability to identify settings of a plot. Students will then discuss and record examples of plot from their own experiences with literature in small groups, choosing either books that they have read in class, or books that the group members have read independently. Students will map the plots on story map graphic organizer. Then, we will discuss the plots as a whole class. Student examples will be posted in the classroom for reference.
Lesson 1: Explain to students the Movie Project followed by a short video of previous movies filmed by students. After watching the movies, discuss with students whether or not the movies made sense. What worked or didn't work? Was there a plot? Were the characters developed or not? Did the music go with the setting or mood of the movie? Students should have a better understanding of how a movie should be made.
Lesson 2: Discuss with students the components of a good movie. First, understand the components of a plot. Second, develop characters for movie including personalities, mannerisms, looks, etc. Third, identify the setting for the movie. Have students generate ideas for making a movie and how to go about the writing process. Break students into groups based on compatibilty and or the best interests of the class. Given students a handout that discusses plot, charater, and setting to help students identify the important pieces of making a movie or tellinga story.
Lesson 3: Give students the Tech Movie Project handout and let students begin.
Lesson 4: Show students how to use the digital video cameras and preview a few web sites. Students then use the cameras and practice filming. Students then review their practice video shots and analyze them prior to filming their projects.
Lesson 5: All scripts are written and cameras are distributed for filming. Remind students on how to use the cameras as well as techniques for filming.
