TeachNET Lesson Plans:
Building Language by
Building Videos

-TeachNET Website intro

Video.
of the people, by the people, and for the people-
Kids and Teachers
Basic Idea- We are all media aware, and soaked in the vivid imagery and sound of TV and Movies.

The question is- can we take advantage of that awareness, educate each other to be critical viewers, and especially, become Producers of quality educational content???

The Answer- Sure!

1. Teacher creates for students
- Content recorded for those who missed, or need review
- Play with phenomena, stimulate inquiry, thinking, talk
- Visual Recall for Performance Exams
- Records of Field trips for post-analysis

2. Students create for other students-
- Students teaching other students- they create their own studies, plan, record and edit the visual communication..... to support their thinking, inquiry, studies.
- Field trips- Again, students choose what is useful visual data, then work with it to communicate with others. (especially those who weren’t in the same spot!)
- Take it home- MIT model for family science TV viewing (my interpretation!)

Building Language by Building Videos
Teachers know that many students, especially English Language Learners, benefit from a mix of non-text information and cues. The secret is to break away from passive to active participation in the learning process. Student- produced videos provide highly engaging vehicles for students to construct written and spoken language for the purpose of creating and displaying videos.

3. Communication with the great Outside- What are we studying? May need to SELL our program!?
- Buckyballs- Video Conference with scientists (in conjunction with Scienceline Inquiry)
- share your program - Examples: CCSP Institute, Righetti HS physics, Family Science

4. Staff Development-
-Visual Record of one time experiences
(especially good for tech training..... do the training, then make the visual record available on cd/web so you can “teach others to fish” -instead of always cooking fish for them!)
- Lessonlab- Online software tools for video based Peer coaching,
analysis of instruction and learning (www.lessonlab.com)

What you Need? What are Options ?- Analog video= digitizing card, software
(or use USB external device $99 with Videoshop Software!)
otherwise, DV camera and “firewire” input port (IEE1394)- Don’t spend over $50 on software!
(iMovie is free on new Mac’s, Dazzle is one example on PC- also, QuickTime Pro for PC works)
