Project Description: We will be writing three journal entries after planning a five day trip to a Spanish-speaking country. Students will communicate in the target language writing a three-page journal with illustrations and country information. After they have done so we will also put the same presentation into a PowerPoint presentation. If teachers wish to expand more on this idea they can sign up for free on the website http://www.epals.com to so that their students can communicate with students from other countries.v E-pals is a site where you a teacher sets up an account and all incoming and outgoing messages must be approved by both teachers before students receive e-mail. It also has a filter which flags messages in Spanish and English. Classrooms can be selected by subject, country language and age.

Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language There are parts where they will study government, religion, history and this may be a perspective that is different from the ones that they learn in their traditional classroom.

Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own. They will see pictures and read articles that show differences between the cultures.

Standard 5.1: Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting When they are using e-pals they will have the opportunity to communicate with someone they would not have been able to before.

The Students:  This program is designed for second year foreign langauge and beyond. Also other subject areas like history, geography, government, etc...

Overall Value:E-pals lets them communicate with others in other parts of the world.
PowerPoint is a software program that lets them make slide shows to show others.
Research is useful in any future project or in their business endeavors.

Tips for the Teacher: You can add or take away components of this lesson - you cloud do it in English - do away with e-pals or have students do scrap books instead of powerpoints - options are limitless.
