2012-2013 Ellen Dempsey Grant Program

The Ellen Dempsey Grant award program, seeded with a memorial gift, will provide special grants to teachers as part of the ongoing Teachers Network grant program. Grant applicants who submit excellent, innovative curriculum lessons, or highly effective instructional strategies, will be selected for this honor.

Awarding of the Ellen Dempsey Grant will be based on:

Instructional Strategy Team Grants

• Teachers who have developed a highly effective instructional strategy or who have used the professional learning community model of collaboration to develop instructional strategies.
• Teachers who are motivated to share this expertise with other teachers.

Curriculum Project Grants:

• Teachers who have created highly successful, standards-based, creative, and
innovative curriculum projects or who have used the professional learning community model of collaboration to develop such curriculum projects. Projects may be classroom-tested or unique developing units.
• Teachers who are eager to share their ideas with colleagues.

About Ellen:

Ellen Dempsey, the founder and national executive director of National Teachers Network in New York, was a passionate believer in teachers and coined the Teachers Network phrase "by teachers, for teachers." She was a tireless advocate for bringing the teacher's voice to the educational policy table, believing in the words of Dag Hammarskjold that "the road to holiness necessarily passes through the world of action." She formed the Teachers Network Policy Institute to provide that voice, always combining idealism, vision, and action to make good things happen for teachers. It is fitting that her vision and actions live on through this memorial grant program.
