Grant Writing Tips
1. Follow directions. Carefully read and follow all directions on the application format. Include all of the requested information and signatures. 2. Use action verbs. Use strong action verbs that enable the reader to visualize your project. 3. Clarify your ideas. Use writing techniques such as clustering, mapping and outling to clearly present your project. 4. Avoid jargon. Do not use unnecessary jargon or "edu-speak." Some members of the Advisory Council, who review applications, are not educators; they should be able to understand your project. 5. Use a reasonably short, catchy title. 6. Find and use the selection criteria. (Ask for them if none are given.) Check your written application against them before submitting it; have you addressed all criteria? 7. Have others review your application. It's a good idea to have both an educator and a non-educator review your proposal for clarity. 8. Proofread. Thoroughly review your application before submitting it. Don't rely strictly on spell-check; human eyes are much more discriminating when it comes to catching grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors. Remember that a 12-point font, ample margins, and double spacing are required on both applications, and appreciated by grant readers!
