Course Description:

The seventh grade social studies class as aligned with the California History/Social Studies Framework, includes the study of World history and geography with an examination of the social cultural, and technological changes during the period of 500Ad-1789AD.  The units included in this course are focused on the great civilizations developing concurrently at that time.

Syllabus for World History

Course grades will be based on homework, class work, weekly geography quizzes, unit exams, and other projects.

SEPTEMBER: Review school rules in Handbook

Geography Basics

Unit 1, Links to the Ancient World: introduces concept of world view, reviews fall of ancient Rome & rise of Byzantium.

OCTOBER: Finish Unit 1
Unit 2, The Growth of Islam: includes desert trading cities, Muhammad, expansion of Islam & Islamic Spain.

NOVEMBER: Unit 3, Sub-Saharan Africa: the empires of Ghana, Mali, & Songhai, village life, Bantu migration, coastal trading states, rise of Zimbabwe & Congo.

DECEMBER: Unit 4, Asian Civilizations, Chapter 7 & 8: includes the Mongols, Ottoman & Mughal Empire and China.

JANUARY: Unit 4, Chapter 9: continues with ancient Japan
Unit 5, Medieval Societies Chapter 10: compares feudal life in Japan with feudal life in Europe.

FEBRUARY: Unit 5, Chapter 11: encompass the power of the church including its split between east & west, crusades
Unit 6 Europe, Chapter 12: the Renaissance.

MARCH: Unit 6, Chapters 13-14: the Reformation, Scientific Revolution.
Unit 7, Civilizations of the Americas Chapter 15: includes Olmec, Maya, Tiwanakans, & Moche.

APRIL: Unit 7, Chapter 16: Aztec, Inca & arrival of the Spanish.

MAY: Unit 8 Europe, Chapters 17 & 18: European rule & expansion, enlightenment

JUNE: Age of Discovery: Around the world with Magellan
