Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)

La Cumbre teachers believe that all students should be appropriately challenged at school, including gifted learners. Ms. Grazia Coffin, the school’s GATE-certified specialist, makes sure that teachers have the resources needed to enrich student instruction through acceleration and through differentiation in the depth, complexity, and creativity of the curriculum. Students are placed in GATE classes for language arts, math, and science—placement is determined through district identification, CST scores, and teacher recommendation.

You can find out more information about the Santa Barbara High School District GATE program at http://www.sbceo.k12.ca.us/~sbhsdgate/. Among other resources, it has a small but excellent lending library available to parents, students and teachers, including titles like:

  • The Gifted Kids Survival Guide: A Teen Handbook. Judith Galbraith, M.A. & Jim Delisle, Ph.D.
  • Perfectionism: What's Bad About Being Too Good? Miriam Adderholdt, Ph.D and Jan Goldberg
  • Playing Smart - A Parent's Guide to Enriching, Offbeat Learning Activities for Ages 4-14. Susan K. Perry
  • The Survival Guide for Parents of Gifted Kids , How To Understand, Live With, and Stick Up for Your Gifted Child. Sally Yahnke Walker, Ph.D.
