Weekly Update #3

August 29, 2010

Once again, welcome to the 2010-2011 school year at La Cumbre. We are off to a great start after completing the first week. Our enrollment is 538, up 58 students from last year. We have 238 students in 8th grade and 300 in 7th grade. We will also complete our last schedule changes in math and Core during the first part of next week, so that we can all settle in for the year.

Over the past week, students spent time to review the Student Handbook, which is now in their binder. We encourage you to review our procedures with your student. 7th grade students also received their Agendas, which they are expected to have daily. This is where they record homework assignments daily, so that you can check assignments. Textbooks to be taken home were also issued for most subjects. Students will have a set of textbooks at home as well as a class set in the room, so that there is no need to carry textbooks in backpacks. Please secure the textbooks in a safe place to avoid book fines for loss or damage at the end of the year.

7th grade students spent last Wednesday reviewing the 6 pillars of good character from Character Counts! while the 8th graders began reading our One Book One School novel, The Skin I'm In. 7th graders will read the novel after the Thanksgiving break. We finished off the week with an all school assembly 3 screen multi-media production about Courage - Dare to Move, which encouraged students to always do their best and not let any limitation or obstacle get in the way of high achievement as a student and as a person.

The ASES after school program activities begin on Monday. Students must attend the program a minimum of 3 days per week until 5:30 and are allowed to change activities as they wish. Students in the ASES program must have a 7th period class. If they don't have a regular class, they have been assigned to Homework Club rooms to read and finish homework.

REMINDER - Del Castillo concert on Sunday, September 5th at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 from the school office or Lobero Ticket Office. Students who sell 5 tickets receive one free. This is a 100% fundraiser for La Cumbre music and performing arts, and it will be a "dance in the aisles" event. If you cannot attend, we are happy to accept your donation for scholarship tickets for deserving students. You can read more about this award winning band at www.delcastillomusic.com.

The Associated Student Body (ASB) schoolwide fundraiser will start on September 1st. Students will be asked to sell Innisbrook gift wrap and other gifts to raise money for ASB programs, including Renaissance rewards, assemblies, dances, etc. Prizes will be awarded to top sellers.

The Homework List will start this coming week. Teachers will submit names of students who have not completed all class work and homework on time (Thursday), and a list will be generated and distributed on Friday morning. Parents will receive a phone message on Friday evening. Students not on the list will be rewarded by going to lunch 5 minutes early for the following week. Our goal is to identify and assist students needing help with work while holding students accountable for 100% work completion.

La Cumbre's Walk n Roll Challenge begins on Wednesday. This partnership with the Safe Routes to School Coalition for Sustainable Transportation tallies the number of students who walk to school, come by bus, and carpool to school. The class with the highest percentage each semester receives a field trip to Zodo's.
