Mastery Math

Mastery Math is a unique math program offered to Monroe students in grades 2 through 6. It is based on the California Mathematics Standards and is designed to accommodate the widely different rates at which students learn. Mastery Math consists of a series of math objectives (or skills) arranged in a prescribed order for students to master. In order to move on to a new math objective, students must show mastery of the concept and must have the prerequisite skills needed to move on. As objectives are mastered, students work their way through this hierarchy. The hierarchy of math objectives allows teachers to deliver appropriate and timely instruction to meet the varied needs of the student body.

Mastery Math takes place from 8:30 AM to 9:20 AM. Each teacher is assigned to teach a specific group of math objectives. These objectives are called terminals.

During the Mastery Math period students go to their designated teachers' rooms and receive instruction on the specific math skills they are learning. Upon mastering the skill, students are then assigned to a new terminal.

A record of each student's progress is kept in a Mastery Math folder that accompanies the student to each room to which he/she is assigned. In addition, each homeroom
contains a binder listing the Mastery Math record of each student in that room. These binders are available to parents to review their child's progress.

Mastery Math, combined with our comprehensive homeroom math program, provides Monroe students with a complete grade-level through advanced math curriculum.

Homework
During Mastery Math students receive instruction on skills related to their assigned terminals. Students practice and apply what they are learning. In general, all Mastery Math work takes place during this period. Most students will also receive math homework as part of their weekly homework packet in their homerooms.

If you feel your child needs additional help in a specific terminal, you may send a note to the Mastery Math teacher requesting homework be sent home. If work is requested, please spend time working with your child and be sure all work is returned the following day. Teachers will also give homework for individual students whom they feel are in need of additional practice.

Volunteers
Mastery Math is always looking for volunteers to help during this first period of the day. (Math knowledge is not required!) It is helpful for the volunteers to work on a specified day or days each week. If you are interested or would like more information on volunteer opportunities, please leave your name and phone number with the school secretary or come by the math office.
