Site-Based GATE Program

This program is especially designed for students in grades three through five who have been identified as gifted by a process that has been in effect for many years in the Santa Barbara School District. Talented and high performing students may be referred by both teachers and parents. Standardized test data, student performance assessments, and portfolios are also considered when determining student eligibility.

The primary goal is to provide a program in which gifted and talented students can develop their abilities to the fullest. Students are encouraged to extend their skills into the higher orders of thinking and reasoning.

Thematic teaching strategies are used to integrate wide varieties of subject matter and creative skills into the academic program through the following areas of study:
Grade 3
Exploring Fables & Fairy Tales
Amateur Radio
Animal Science Investigations

Grade 4
National Parks
Script Writing - California History
Logic, Readers Theater and Literature

Grade 5
Period of Exploration: 1200-1600
American History, Explorers (pre-Civil War and Civil War)

Opportunities for learning include Spanish language instruction, computer training, science and math skills, and experiences in the dramatic and visual arts.
