Ongoing Planning

Santa Barbara School District has adopted the new math program, Mathland, to implement the state math framework. We are integrating this adoption into our Mastery Math Program by alternating the programs and by utilizing materials and ideas from each, thereby enhancing both.

Project READ supports our established reading program, providing a consistent approach to the teaching of phonics and of written language. Its three components are I) Phonology, II) Comprehension, and III) Written Expression. It complements the Open Court and the MacMillan-McGraw Hill reading programs very well.

Although both word-attack and comprehension skills are taught, the emphasis in grades 1-3 is on phonics instruction. The lessons are sequential and the students are involved in many hands-on experiences.

Project READ is a multisensory, structured language arts program. The instructional methods utilize the visual, auditory, and tactile senses of the student. students see the symbol, hear the sound, and have tactile experiences that include writing, tracing, moving, and feeling three dimensional models of the symbols and concepts.
