Library

Library media services support teaching and learning at Monroe School. Our library is a popular place for students, with four Internet accessible computers, circulation software for finding books, word processing programs and a printer. The library staff includes a credentialed library media teacher, an assistant and eight parent volunteers.
The library has more than 15,000 titles, a ratio of 28 books for each student. All 1000 Accelerated Reader books in the library's collection have been posted with reading levels for student ease in selection. We have videos and CDs available for checkout and encyclopedias and research information on CD-ROMS and cable TV access. Last year students checked out approximately 40,000 books. Mindful of our diverse population, we have primary language books in Spanish and high interest/low level reading books for below grade level readers. Every class attends the library each week. It is open before and after school, and is available for parents and families to check out books anytime during the school day. The Reading Incentive Program for grades K-5, rewards students monthly for reaching their reading goals.
Our library was the recipient of the governor's Reading Program award. During the 2000-01 school year, nearly 500 students in grades K-5 read 1,257,907 pages. The librarian and three teachers attend literature classes and share new books and teaching ideas with all teachers. Eleven third, fourth and fifth grade teachers attended a Reading Renaissance/Accelerated Reader workshop.
