Program Highlights

Monroe School has a cohesive staff committed to a learning environment that promotes individual self-worth and academic excellence. The staff has developed and implemented an innovative mathematics program that allows students to (move at individual paces, with built-in review tests, which form the ongoing evaluation process.

An "English emphasis" program allows limited and non-English speaking students to learn English through the natural approach, using vocabulary of interest and usefulness to them. All students gain appreciation of ethnic cultures through special units of study and monthly multi-cultural assemblies.

The Read-at-Home [RAH] program supports and rewards nightly literature and reading experiences at home. Classes in art, drama, computer, science, Spanish and literature provide after-school enrichment. A tutorial center is available for students needing academic assistance. Parents also have an opportunity to receive ESL instruction.

Monroe also promotes art through the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, with classes taught by working artisans. Fourth and fifth graders attend concerts given by the Santa Barbara Symphony. The Monroe annual Science Fair promotes an active science program and has been a springboard for many County Science Fair winners. Ninety percent of our students enter each Science Fair. Over 200 projects are on display.

All of the programs depend on a relationship with parents and the school community that is valued for the respect, cooperation, support, and participation obtained.
