First Grade

Language Arts

The first grade Language Arts program consists of an integrated approach to skill development in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The Language Arts program is incorporated into all areas of the curriculum, including science, social studies, music, art and mathematics.


Mathematics

By the end of first grade, students understand and use the concept of "ones" and "tens" in the place value number system. They add and subtract small numbers with ease. They measure with simple units and locate objects in space. They describe data and analyze and solve simple problem situations.

  • Energy causes change and comes in different forms.
  • There are predictable patterns of change caused by the movement of the earth, sun and moon.
  • Living things have specific needs and grow and develop in many different ways.

  • Living things get what they need from each other and from their environment.
