Technology at MUS

There are currently 2 computer labs available for classroom use at MUS. Each class visits the labs twice each week to work on their computer skills. In addition, there are 4-6 computers in each classroom for the students to use to extend the skills and concepts that are presented in the computer labs. The main lab is open each morning before school from 8:00 to 8:25 for the students to use.

Keyboarding at MUS

Projects:

First Grade
Each class is designing and creating a slide show presentation. Each child plans and then creates a page of the slide show. Topics for the slide shows include Families and Our Community. Students learn to include sound and transitiions in their presentation.

Second Grade
Each class is designing and creating a multimedia presentation using a program called HyperStudio. Each student researches and prepares information about the topic, then uses it in the presentation. Students learn how to include text, sound, graphics, buttons, and transitions in thieir project. Second grade topics include Owls, The Life Cycle of a Pumpkiin, and Monarch Butterflies.

Third Grade
Each class is designing and creating a multimedia presentation using a program called HyperStudio. Each student researches and prepares information about the topic, then uses it in the presentation. Students learn how to include text, sound, graphics, buttons, and transitions in thieir project. Some third grade classes are doing their projects on Chumash Indians, other classes are still deciding on a topic.

Fourth Grade
Fourth grade classes are planning a number of technology projects this year. Students have already begun working on their keyboarding skills, learning to use a program called Inspiration, and improving their word processing skills. Mr. Bower's class has been leaning to work with digital video using a program called iMovie.

Fifth Grade
The fifth grade classes have been working with a program called HyperStudio. Using this program, the students have created autobiographical projects called stacks. A stack is a file that contains one or more cards, along with any buttons, graphics, sounds, animations, web links, and other multimedia elements that have been placed on those cards. The students are designing the layout of each card, and learning to use animation. They have also learned how to scan a picture into their presentation. Each 5th grade student has his/her own e-mail account and is learning to use e-mail as an effective communication tool.

The 5th grade students continue to work on their keyboarding skills. The goal is for each student to be able to type 20 words per minute with at least 95% accuracy.

Sixth Grade
Sixth grade students use computers and related technology for many of their assignments. They have learned about spreadsheets, and how to create and use them. They have continued to learn and use word processing applications to create different kinds of documents including newletters, poems, title pages, etc. Students have learned to use the Internet effectively for research.

The 6th grade students continue to work on their keyboarding skills. The goal is for each student to be able to type 30 words per minute with at least 95% accuracy.
Later in the year, students will use computers extensively as part of their opinion poll project, learning how to create and format tables within a document and to graph their results. Then each student will create a web page with their results. Each student will participate in the 10th annual Computer Art contest by designing, drawing, saving, and printing a color picture using a computer. Each student will also create a multimedia presentation about their experiences at W.O.L.F School using Power Point.
