TWENTY-SIXTH ANNUAL

SOUTH COAST

MATHEMATICS SUPERBOWL

Hosted by The Montecito Union School, The Cold Spring School, The Peabody Charter School and the Santa Barbara County Education Office

Date: Thursday, May 17, 2007
Time: 8:00 AM to 12 NOON
Place: Earl Warren Showgrounds/Warren Hall
Participants: 4th, 5th and 6th Grade Students

This is an invitation to all teachers and students in grades 4,5 and 6 in schools throughout Santa Barbara County to participate in a mathematics competition event that is exciting and challenging.

Each school may use a screening process of its own design in order to select four students from each grade level who will best represent the school at the Math Superbowl.   We hope that every eligible school will be represented.

School and individual awards will be given.  There will be an entry fee of $60 per school to cover costs associated with the event.

Pencils, scratch paper and the test materials will be provided.  Hand-held calculators may be used in the team competition only and must be provided by the school or individual students.

Due to space restriction, participating schools are asked to bring only the primary competitors to the event.

SCHEDULE

8:00 -  8:30 AM Registration

8:30 -  8:45 AM Instructions

8:45 -  9:40 AM Individual Competition (Test)

9:40 -10:00 AM Break (Refreshments Served)

10:00-10:40 AM Team Problems (five problems)

10:40-11:30 AM Hands-On Activity

11:30-12:00 PM Presentation of Awards

The individual competition consists of a 50 item multiple-choice test. Each problem is worth one point. No calculators may be used for this test. After a break for refreshments, each grade level team of 4 students competes on a team test made up of 5 questions. Each problem is worth 4 points. Teams may use calculators for this test. Next is a hands-on activity where the students compete as a grade level team. This hands-on team activity will be a challenging event designed to solve a particular problem using certain types of materials. Separate awards are given for this activity. Following the hands-on activity, awards are presented to individuals, grade level teams, and schools.

To help us plan and organize for the event, there are 2 steps to the registration process.

Step 1: Submit a completed School Registration form.  It must be returned to the Montecito Union School, along with the $60 registration fee in the form of a check or purchase order, by mail or delivered in person.  Although we anticipate being able to accommodate all interested schools, it is in each school’s best interest to return the School Registration form as soon as possible to assure a place in the event.

Step 2: Submit a completed Student Entry Form, with the names of the participants.  It must be received by Monday, 5/1/07.  This form can be mailed, faxed, or hand-delivered.

In the past, we have tried to provide schools with copies of past tests, answer keys, and other support materials when requested by the schools. Unfortunately, it has now reached the point where we will no longer be able to accommodate this type of request. Each school that participates in the Math Superbowl receives a packet that includes copies of all tests with answer keys. It is the school’s responsibility to maintain a file of these materials if they wish to have them available for practice. In addition, you may use the links below to download sample copies of both the individual and team tests for each grade level.

We would like to thank all you for your continued support of the Math Superbowl.
