AUTO BODY AND PAINT

BEGINNING AUTO BODY

This two-semester course is designed to equip students with entry-level skills to enable them to obtain jobs as helpers in auto body and paint shops to: 

1. Do such jobs as remove, replace and repair the various parts of an automobile body such as doors, hoods, grills, and bumpers; prepare automobiles for priming, spot painting and complete paint jobs
2. Develop a knowledge of materials, tools and equipment used in auto body repair
3. Develop an appreciation of good, clean, safe, skillful and accurate working methods
4. Develop common trade practices
5. Develop the responsibilities of an alert, safe worker.

ADVANCED AUTO BODY

This two-semester advanced course is designed to prepare students with current entry level job skills, for advanced job placement in specialized positions. Upon completion of the entry level training in Auto Body Repair, an advanced student will be prepared to obtain jobs requiring skills in: 
1. Creating the surface angles and curves to a desired specification 
2. Layout and application of artistic designs utilizing pinstripping materials on prepared surfaces 
3. Perform custom painting to a customer's specifications 
4. Perform custom design concepts off of detailed drawings or from verbal instructions 
5. Making a damage appraisal, estimating labor and parts costs, and completing required paperwork 
6. Ability to repair plastic materials and equipment, understand plastic repair methods of specific specialized materials 

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY

This two year comprehensive course covers the principles of operation, care, maintenance and repair of the automobile. The many physical laws of nature relating to the theory of operation and actual use of the automobile will be presented via demonstrations, discussions and individualized instruction. Two-thirds of the total course hours will be devoted to practical, hands-on working situations in a high school shop setting. Appropriate charts, films, videos and field trips will supplement course instruction. 

SBCC College Credit Available: Those students who complete this course with an A or B grade, and who have successfully completed all course competencies will not be required to take the prerequisite Auto 101 or Auto 110 courses at Santa Barbara City College, but will instead be able to enroll in one of the specialty automotive service courses. Upon successful completion of the student's first SBCC specialty automotive service course, SBCC will award retroactive college credit for the Auto 101 and Auto 110 course satisfied by taking this ROP course.

Instruction will cover the following: banking terminology, basic bookkeeping, check processing, cross selling, teller procedures, reading of computer printouts, location of errors, operation of a variety of banking machines, etc.

The computer Technology and Repair Course will train students in fundamental computer maintenance and repair and prepare students to take the A+ Certification Exams. Students will learn and develop entry-level skills utilizing classroom small/large group interaction, lab training, and cooperative group learning activities. The students will learn (1) the workings of disk drives, computers, monitors, and printers, (2) the operation of test equipment, and (3) the electronic fundamentals necessary to understand and service basic computer systems.

Students earn credit for SBCC CNEE 102, PC Repair I: Hardware. (3 units) and for SBCC CNEE 112, PC Repair II: Software. (3 units)

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

A basic course in construction skills and concepts. The emphasis is on wood construction. In succeeding semesters there is increased opportunity for individual responsibility and self-paced learning activities in non-wood trades, including electrical, plumbing and dry wall.

Entry level job skills, effective work habits and safety is stressed. In addition, the course emphasizes the concepts of construction technology, which are necessary for further technical training and career advancement.

Basic math, graphic and verbal communication skills are developed. Classroom instruction will be paired with construction lab activities and simulations in order to cover course subject areas. Whenever possible, this lecture/lab simulation format will be supplemented with appropriate construction projects that fit into the course scope and sequence.

Upon completion of this 360-hour course sequence, students will earn a Certificate of Skills that details the competencies they have mastered. Program graduates will be eligible for entry level employment in the area of construction specialty pursued in this course.

This is a simulated business class that is modeled on the successful Virtual Enterprises International program taught in many high schools and colleges throughout the world. It is designed to give students the experience of working in a real business environment.

The students will determine the nature of their business, its products and services, its management and structure, and learn the daily operation of a business under the guidance of the instructor with the support of real business partners.Emphasis will be placed in using current business software packages and the Internet for business transactions.

Students will conduct transactions with other high school and college Virtual Enterprise businesses in California, the United States and throughout the world. Students will be engaged in a variety of specific activities including market research, advertising, buying and selling products and services, accounting, paying wages and taxes and negotiating loans with a central bank.

The Junior Achievement economics unit has been incorporated into the curriculum to provide the students with an overview of micro and macroeconomics. Students will study supply and demand, the Federal Reserve System, taxation by local, state and federal governments, business organizations, the stock market, and international transactions.

This course qualifies for Economics credit for graduation; it will also satisfy UC A-G entrance requirement.

Students will earn credit for SBCC MKT 101- Introduction to Management. (3 units)

ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY

This instructional program prepares individuals for enrollment in advanced vocational and technical education programs and includes occupational and basic technical information and laboratory experiences directly related to electricity and electronics.

Individuals are provided with the fundamentals of the theory, measurement, control, and application of electrical energy. Instructional activities include reading instructions, interpreting schematics, adjusting experimental apparatus, taking measurements, testing circuits, and recording results.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

This job preparation course will provide students with skills necessary to gain an entry-level position in the field of Graphic Design and Digital Imaging.

The course will cover the use of the Macintosh computer, scanners, digital cameras, CD-ROM digital libraries, design, illustration, and proof printing in the digital imaging industry.

Students will learn to use Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PhotoShop, Quark, Painter, Kai's Power Tools, Bryce 4, and other appropriate image creation software. The focus will be on graphic design and editing for generating files for print publication. Students will keep a portfolio of their work to show prospective employers.

Successful completion of this course will prepare students for entry-level employment in graphic design, multimedia, and Internet industries.

Prerequisites: Completed a beginning art class and a computer operations class.

HEALTH CAREERS I

4) the use of fundamental patient care equipment
5) medical terminology and vital signs
6) the importance of nutrition and exercise

HEALTH CAREERS ADV.

This two-term advanced course is intended for students in grade 12 who will be pursuing a career in the health care field that requires postsecondary education. The course will provide students with opportunities to obtain entry-level job skills while training in an actual health care setting.

The course will cover:

1) the development of student health careers portfolio
2) characteristics of successful health care professionals
3) communicating in the workplace
4) patient examination techniques
5) heart anatomy, physiology, and EKGs
6) student internships in the lab, emergency room, therapy, radiology, ophthalmology, nutrition, and perinatal nursing areas at our local hospitals
7) and student preference of selected health care areas.

After the initial three weeks of class, students will be placed into community classroom sites at local hospitals and clinics.

NETWORK ESSENTIALS

This competency-based course prepares students for entry-level jobs as network technicians. Included are information technology core skills in the area of internetworking. Skills are developed from hands-on training on high-tech networking equipment.

  • Students with intermediate computer skills will learn IT core basics such as local area network fundamentals, internet fundamentals, server types and operations, protocols and addressing, topologies, OSI models and media types, network security issues and solutions.
  • Students will develop skills that will include command line operations, installation and configuration of client networking hardware, software, media, routers, and servers.
  • Particular emphasis given to the use of network administration and troubleshooting techniques that include decision-making and problem-solving techniques in applying science, mathematics, communication, and social studies concepts.
  • Additional training and instruction are provided in the proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment, and local, state, and federal safety building and environmental codes and regulations.
  • Integrated throughout the course are career preparation standards, which include basic academic skills, communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving, safety, technology, and other employment skills.

Students who complete semesters 1 and 2 earn credit for SBCC CNEE 125, Introduction to Networking (4 units)

Students who complete semesters 3 and 4 earn credit for SBCC CNEE 126, Switching, Routing and WAN (4 units).

ROBOTICS

Students will design and build a robot that can perform specified complex tasks in order to compete with other teams in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. Preceding coursework in the Engineering Academy is designed to provide the academic foundation necessary to support the students’ participation.

FIRST is an internationally recognized organization that is affiliated with and sponsored by many corporations, government agencies, and academic institutions including Xerox, Delphi, General Motors, NASA, and MIT. Course pre-requisites and participation are subject to instructor approval and an application process.

SPORTS

Learn anatomy and physiology as it relates to sports injury; analyze injuries and design rehabilitation plans; earn First Aid and CPR certification; includes on-the-job training experiences averaging five hours per week.

Note: Students must also enroll in community classroom on-the-job training companion course.

Sports Medicine Community Classroom, a required component of the Sports Medicine program, provides students with practical hands-on training experiences. Students will gain specific on-the-job training (OJT) experiences with one or more of the following local sports medicine related professionals: physical therapist, chiropractor, athletic trainer, physical education instructor, and recreation facility manager/trainer. Each student is required to attend and participate a minimum of five hours per week in this OJT component.
