leadership

The leadership class represents Santa Barbara Junior High School and is the "face" of the school. Our class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 a.m. to plan events for our school. We organize and run the Condor Corner (our morning student store). We organize and plan the school dances. We are also the leaders on campus so we have very high academic and personal expectations. We have monthly fundraisers and other things to help improve the quality of our school. Leadership is comprised of the Asociated Student Body and other students (7th and 8th) that want to make our school a better place.

Teacher Aides or Office Practice

Office Aides will be expected to collect attendance from the classrooms daily. They also will be engaged in special projects like filing, sorting important documents, labeling envelopes for parent mailings, delivering messages to teachers, and passing out important information to classes.

Teacher Aides assist a particular teacher with task that need to be done within the classroom.

Physical Education Aides

PE Aides assist Physical Education teachers and students in several capacities. The Aides help with equipment, set up and take down fields, organize storage areas, and record and file information. They are sometimes asked to assist with lessons and activities as referees, counters, timers, etc.. By fulfilling these duties students learn valuable life skills and practice leadership and responsibility

Library/Media Center Monitor

Monitors learn a great deal about books, libraries and computers while assisting Ms. Glass, Library Media Teacher, in the library. Each monitor learns to check library books and textbooks in and out, process new books, assist with classes, work with periodicals, deliver books and messages, bookmark computer Web sites and more!
It is a year-long class.

Debate

This course is designed to teach public speaking and debating skills, including an introduction to logic, argumentation, critical thinking, and oral communication skills. Students will also learn a variety of research techniques, including print source and appropriate use of internet. All activities and projects in Debate support curriculum standards in the core content areas of English and social studies.

Journalism

Taught by Mr. Steve Shelton, Journalism is an elective that produces our school newspaper, The Condor Press, and school yearbook, The Torchbearer.  Students will also create portfolios of independent writing, learn about layout design with Adobe Indesign, and help out with photography needs throughout the year. Deadlines and responsibility are a key to success in Journalism Class at SBJH.
