The SBJH Performing Arts department gives students a chance to develop their creative side, while also using higher-order thinking skills such as application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.  Students will also have the opportunity to work in the Marjorie Luke Theatre, a professional theater within the school, with state-of-the-art equipment and design.

Theater (Acting) Classes:

In the theater classes, all students study the main tenets of acting: physical, vocal, and facial expression, as well as units in improvisation, scene study (including analysis of the motivations and relationships of characters), film creation, dramatic critique, stage combat, the history of American theater, and world theater (kabuki, commedia dell arte, Shakespeare, etc.)

Stagecraft

In stagecraft, students study the major elements of theatrical design (including mood, theme, and context) and how they relate to costume, set, and lighting design.  Students use their new knowledge of design to complete hands-on projects such as designing costumes, creating "box sets", and lighting musical pieces.  They also study dramatic critique, and learn how to use sewing machines.  Best of all, stagecraft students get to help design and construct the costumes and sets for our full length plays and musicals.  They also have opportunities to run lights, sound, curtains, etc. in the Marjorie Luke Theatre.
