"History, with its investigation of science, philosophy, the rise and fall of empires, the arts and the passions of the past, is the queen of disciplines and the great teacher of mankind." --Irwin Shaw

Students in grade seven study the social, cultural, and technological changes that occurred in Europe, Africa, and Asia in the years A.D. 500-1789. They study the history and geography of great civilizations that were developing concurrently throughout the world during medieval and early modern times.

Students in grade eight study the ideas, issues, and events from the framing of the Constitution up to World War I. After a review of the Revolutionary War era and an in-depth study of the Constitution, students trace the development of American politics, society, culture, and economy and relate them to the emergence of major regional differences. They learn about the challenges facing the new nation, with an emphasis on the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War.

The Social Studies teachers at Santa Barbara Junior High strongly believe that students need not only acquire core knowledge in history, but also develop the critical thinking skills that historians utilize to study the past and its relationship to the present.

"The farther you look back, the farther you can see ahead." --Henry Ford

"History is a pack of lies played upon the dead ." --Voltaire
