Welcome to the beautiful and historic Santa Barbara Junior High School Library Media Center. We encourage parents to visit any time.

The Santa Barbara Junior High School Library Media Center, located on the second floor at SBJHS, is at the heart of the school. Students and teachers benefit from four distinct functions of my job: Textbooks, Library (learning centers, booktalks, small and large group research projects), Technology, and Audiovisual.

The library Media Center contains approximately 20,000 fiction, nonfiction and reference books. School libraries are curriculum libraries, and the resources purchased directly support the state of California curriculum standards and individual subject frameworks. In addition to nonfiction books and computer resources to support research, the SBJHS Library Media Center has an extensive fiction collection for class assignments, the Reading Break, and recreational reading.

computer

There are 18 computer stations in the library research lab which are networked to a large, good-quality color printer. There is also a scanner which is used often in research projects—mostly for graphics. Students use programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and databases for class projects, during lunch and after school daily.

Library Hours

  • Open all six periods.
  • Open during lunch Monday through Thursday. Closed Friday at lunch. Students must obtain a library hall pass before lunch the day(s) they wish to come in. Students read, check out books and magazines, use the computers for research and hobby searches, do homework and study for tests.
  • Open after school daily for at least an hour—usually more—unless Ms. Glass, the Library Media Teacher, has a meeting. She'll try to give advance notice.

Textbooks

Students have a classroom copy in each teacher's room and a home copy for homework. They are fortunate not to have to carry textbooks back-and-forth to school.
The textbooks are very expensive. Please ask your son/daughter to keep the book in a safe place so that it won't be damaged or lost. The books are returned at the end-of-the-school year.

Scholastic Books, Inc.

Each month students have access to the monthly Scholastic TAB catalog in their English or Reading classes.  Ms. Glass collects the order forms and money/checks and the books are delivered in about 10 days.  This is a great way for students to order a variety of  books and other fun items at discounted prices.
