Santa Barbara Junior High School

STUDENT BULLETIN
08/24/09

1. Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year.

This Week at SBJHS
Lunch:  Only 7th grade students will be dismissed at 12:00 for lunch this week, to give them a head start on the lunch procedure.
All students will line up in a single line beginning at the cafeteria entrance and going toward the back of the multipurpose room.  In fairness to all students, there is to be no "cutting" into the line, or buying food for your friends.  No food or drinks are to be taken out to the field or basketball court areas.  You may go to those areas when you have finished your lunch.  All lunches are to be eaten in the cafeteria or designated eating areas.  Students are also reminded to put their lunch trash into the trash or recycling cans provided.  Students cannot remain in the building during lunchtime!

Yearbooks are on sale now!  Please turn in book forms and money to the office.  You may also purchase a yearbook in Mr. Shelton's room 218 for $40.00.

2. Attendance:  If you are late to class, you should have a note or a pass from the attendance office, this will allow you to be excused from your tardy otherwise you will be issued a detention.
If you must be absent from school, have your parents call the Attendance Office to excuse you as soon as you find out you will be absent.  Your parents may leave a message on the voicemail attendance extension (482) 24 hours a day.  If it is not possible for your parents to call in, you must bring a note to clear your absences when you return to school.
Failure to clear your absences will result in a truancy.
THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE IS IN THE FRONT OFFICE.  All students should report there for re-admits, period 1 high school sign-ins, check-outs, and other attendance-related business.
In order to be allowed back in class when you return from an absence, you must obtain a re-admit slip before school from the office.  You may get your readmit slips and off campus passes in the office every morning from 7:50-8:10 a.m.  except from the office Wednesdays – 8:30-8:50a.m.
Congratulations!  As of today, all of you have perfect attendance!  Everyone with outstanding attendance (no unexcused absences, or no tardies – details later) will receive a prize at the end of the school year.  Grand prize is a mountain bike that will be displayed later.

3. Message From the Counselors:   No program changes will be considered until next week.  Fill out an appointment slip to see Mr. Fredeen or Mrs. Rutherford.  They will call students in as soon as possible.

WEB Leaders: All 7th grade students should dress comfortably tomorrow and bring a sweatshirt/sweater in case it is cold. You will be outside most of the morning with your WEB groups. Also, we will be having a lunch BBQ, so lunch will be provided tomorrow. Mr.Fredeen                                             8/24

4. Cafeteria
Students need to submit a new application every year for the free/reduced lunch program.  Students who qualified for free/reduced lunch and breakfast last year will continue to receive free/reduced lunch beginning today and until the end of September.  This includes 7th graders.  After September students will no longer be eligible for free lunch program if a new application is not on file and you will no longer receive free meals.  Please allow 2 weeks to process your application.  When you receive a letter notifying your eligibility for this program, please bring that letter to the cafeteria.  Students will need to know their student ID number. Students paying for meals can pay cash at meal time.

5. Message from the Front Office
Bus Passes:  Please bring the correct amount of money, or check made out to SBJH, when you purchase an MTD bus ticket in the office before and after school Monday Wednesday and Friday only.  There will be no exceptions.  Tickets cost $8.25, or $6.50 if you qualify for free/reduced bus passes for 10 rides. Students who need bus schedules for Mountain Drive, Eucalyptus Hill may pick one up in the office.
Free yellow school buses transport students daily from the Franklin, Cleveland, Peabody and Roosevelt attendance areas.  Get your free/reduced bus schedule in the office.

Buy your Condor Kit (PE clothes & agenda) from your PE teachers at lunch.

6. Students are not to enter or exit from the doors by the Cota parking lot by room 150 or side hallway.

Students who ride bicycles to school are to park them in the bike cage next to Quad 300.  You must have a helmet to bring a bike on campus.  You are not to ride bicycles on campus during the day. The bike cage is open from 7:45-8:05.  The cage will be open at the end of 6th period 2:30 p.m.  It will be locked at all other times.

Students must leave campus by 2:35 p.m. unless they have a 7th period, detention or tutorial with a teacher.

No hats or caps are to be worn anywhere on campus.  They have created too many problems which have taken time away from important instructional activities.  After this warning, these items will be confiscated if worn at school.  Also, beepers, radios, cell phones, walkmans and CD players are not allowed on campus.  After this warning, these items will be confiscated by staff.  Mrs. Bolton/Mr. Madrigal.

This is a closed campus.  No student is permitted to leave school during lunch or at any other time without a written pass from the office.

Only a few skateboards/scooters are being allowed at school, and those are by special permission. Skateboard/scooter permission request forms are available in the main office.  They must be signed and returned by Friday, September 4th.  Beginning Monday, September 7th, no skateboard/scooter is to be brought to school unless the permission form has been returned and permission has been granted.  See Mr. Madrigal for further information.  Students who request a skateboard/form form must meet individually with their Asst. Principals to discuss the policy. Students must show proof that they have a helmet before permission is granted.

Restrooms:  There are four boys' restrooms.  They are located downstairs at the end of the hall by room 132, upstairs at the end of the hall next to the library/textbook room, next to the globe theater and in the boys' P.E. area.  The three girls' restrooms are located downstairs across from the offices, upstairs next to room 208, next to room 150 and in the girls' P.E. area.  Help our great custodians and keep them clean.

Everyone signed a Dress Code Policy.  This policy will be strictly enforced for all students beginning on the first day of school.
