What is an Apprenticeship?
- Apprenticeship is a proven “learn-while-you-earn” model that combines paid, on-the-job training (OJT), provided by the employer that hires the apprentice, with related supplemental instruction (RSI) through coursework, resulting in debt-free postsecondary credentials. Apprenticeships ease the burden for those wishing to upskill or transition into a new career by providing the opportunity to work and learn at the same time.

The Future of Apprenticeships
- Four years ago, Governor Gavin Newsom laid out his administration’s ambitious goal to expand California’s apprenticeship system to serve 500,000 apprentices by 2029. The rationale for this significant investment is the proven track record of apprenticeships in the skilled trades and other traditional sectors. Today, there are many innovative programs emerging in new sectors, such as health care, information technology, advanced manufacturing, and education. The Santa Barbara County Office of Education is excited to announce that it has launched its first apprenticeship program for Early Childhood Educators.
